The Oxford dictionary defines the term ‘belief’ in multiple ways:
1. An acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof 1.1 Something one accepts as true or real; a firmly held opinion 1.2 A religious conviction 2. (Belief in) Trust, faith, or confidence in (someone or something) The scientific theory of evolution is often presumed by creation-admirers to be a belief; a notion that hasn’t any evidence (which is clearly self-contradictory considering the notion of creation has no evidence whatsoever). By definition, the scientific theory of evolution is not a belief, neither an assumption or notion, nor a supposition or guess. Why? - Since there is abundant amounts of evidence that validate the scientific theory of evolution. Coming to terms with definitions is important and even so, history-deniers will still form an excuse to disagree with the theory of evolution.
This brings me to the definition of theory. Evolutionists always get bombarded with the statement ‘it is only a theory’. As with many words in the dictionary, there are alternate definitions and in science, the definition of theory is entirely the opposite of the common word. Generally, a theory can be used in conversation when referring to an idea or a notion. But since evolution is science, we must use the scientific definition of a theory and the meaning is:
“A scientific theory is a unifying and self-consistent explanation of fundamental natural processes or phenomena that is totally constructed of corroborated hypotheses. A theory, therefore, is built of reliable knowledge – built of scientific facts – and its purpose is to explain major natural processes or phenomena. Scientific theories explain nature by unifying many once-unrelated facts or corroborated hypotheses; they are the strongest and most truthful explanations of how the universe, nature, and life came to be, how they work, what they are made of, and what will become of them. Since humans are living organisms and are part of the universe, science explains all of these things about ourselves.” (Read more here, http://www.geo.sunysb.edu/esp/files/scientific-method.html). To conclude, the theory of evolution is as true as you can get in science, it is the pinnacle of confirmed reality and it is far from a belief. The evidence that proves evolution is so fascinating and overwhelming that it would only take an argument from incredulity to deny it, of which creation followers are renowned for. - Daniel C.
