The subject of religion isn’t the most researched or discussed subject among the general public. Many people attempt to avoid a discussion regarding religion; attempting to abolish it from their minds when an atrocity is committed with religion being its root motivation. Presently, there are likely more agnostics in secular parts of the world than are atheists or theists.
The Lazy Getaway
By definition, agnosticism entails the belief that “…nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God”. Doesn’t it appear to be a plausible argument? Not entirely. Although a small minority may legitimately consider oneself as agnostic due to careful thought on the existence of God, it is more often used as an evasion from questioning theism overall. This is what I consider the “lazy getaway”, meaning the self-categorisation of agnosticism can imply that one is only labelling themselves as agnostic to simply avoid thinking about the “controversial” subject of religion and the existence of a deity. As a result of extensive discussions and distributed questionnaires, many who know little about religion and its opposition (science) are those who categorise themselves as agnostic. Harmoniously, – relating to my essay “The Audacious Religion Defender” – those who ridiculously attempt to justify and defend religious absurdity tend to apply themselves into the agnostic position. The Temporary Position Before I endeavoured to question the existence of a God, gain insight on religion and provide reading material for the non-religious – and even religious – community, I upheld the position of agnosticism. But not as an unpopular “lazy getaway” position, instead as a temporary position. This stage exists prior to the self-study of religion and the essential questioning of God’s existence. More than likely, when becoming unbiasedly self-educated on religion and science, the agnostic viewpoint fades; hence becoming a non-believer in God, but for those who may not understand science or haven’t any patience to comprehend many theories from it, the position may inevitably change to theism. Conclusion Simply, the temporary position is a more desired position than a viewpoint that originates from mere lazy thought. Overall, by definition, agnosticism indicates a lack of logic when the position is maintained and emphasised. Can the existence of a deity even be known? Well that roots back to the unceasing creation of the idea – the imaginative man-made idea of a God. Since the presence of a supernatural being is a mere idea formed from antiquity and irrational mythology, then God simply cannot exist until proven otherwise by its claimants.
